The Secret Chicken Quest

Have you heard of the secret chicken quest in World of Warcraft? You heard me right! There is a quest that is centered around Westfall, but can be completed in other zones, where you can get yourself your very own Prairie Chicken as a pet. This is primarily an alliance quest, but it can be obtained by horde as well!

Farmer Saldean

First, get yourself down to Westfall and go to Farmer Saldean located at the Saldean farm in the upper middle of the zone. Now you dont have to finish the quest here, but you might as well do it here since there are chickens running around the farm and you can use any of them. Talk to Farmer Saldean and buy some special chicken feed for 20 copper.

Start Clucking

Now what you are going to want to do after you have your special chicken feed, is find yourself a chicken, select it, and start clucking over and over again. You will want to use the /chicken emote to do this. Now there is roughly a 1 in 50 chance of getting the quest each time you do the /chicken command. So you may want to setup a macro for this. Otherwise, just type really fast and it should trigger. I have had it trigger on my 3rd /chicken, and I have also had it trigger after about 100 /chicken, so its pretty random.

Chicken Goes Green

After you make a fool of yourself strutting around this chicken clucking over and over, you will eventually see the text in your chat window that says 'Chicken looks up at your quizzically, Maybe you should inspect it?' You will notice the chicken now has a green ring around it like a friendly mob and is no longer yellow like a neutral mob. Go ahead and right click on your chicken and get the quest.

Grab The Egg

Now if you have the special chicken feed in your inventory, go ahead and just right click on the chicken again. The chicken will lay an egg for you! This egg you have to interact with like a chest, and once you open it up, the egg will appear in your inventory. Make sure you have room for it. The egg is BoP(Bind on Pickup) so you can't give it away or sell it. Be careful that no one is around to ninja loot your egg!

Display Your Pet

Give your pet a try by right clicking on the egg thats in your inventory. This Prairie Chicken looks pretty much like a normal chicken except for its name. This is very similar to the chicken you can buy in Shimmering Flats. It does seem to be more rare than that one however, especially if you are horde! So if I get into a pet competition, I usually draw my prairie chicken about 3rd.

Horde Can Get This?

Yes! Horde players can get this pet. However its very rarely seen on the horde side. If you are a horde on a PvP server, then its even more rare and you are downright cool if you have one of these pets. Since the egg is BoP, the egg cannot be traded or sold on the auction. You can sell the special chicken feed on the auction, however when a horde tries to actually do the quest, you will eventually get the 'Chicken looks up at your quizzically' message, but still wont get the quest! The chicken wont turn green for horde.

However if an alliance player goes and does the quest, the egg that drops is open to everyone. So if you have an alliance friend, they can do the quest and you can grab the egg. Be careful on a PvP server, the noobs in Westfall tend to get alarmed when they see high level horde standing around in their zone. Another option for horde on a PvP server is to wait until an alliance noob does the quest, gank them and grab the egg!

Overall, the Prairie Chicken a great pet to have in your collection. Its easy and alot of fun to do the quest and I always make a point of doing it whenever I level my alliance characters in Westfall. Enjoy!
